Jihad in Arabic means "to strive." Jihad is often translated as "holy war," but this is incorrect. There are two types of jihad, the greater and lesser.
The greater jihad is a personal struggle against temptation and sin. The lesser jihad is the defense of Islam against agression. This can be carried out through writing, speech, or military action. Military jihad may only be carried out as a response to an attack or assault; the Quran forbids the harming of women, children, the ill, or noncombatants.
