Mary Magdalen was a New Testament biblical figure reputed by the Gnostics to be the wife of Jesus Christ. Mary Magdalen figures prominently in Church iconography in the South of France, an area suggested by some to be a Gnostic refuge. In the Gnostic Gospel of Philip, she is named by Jesus as the first of the apostles.
