Definition: The principal deity
of a Roman religious Cult that existed concurrent with Christianity. Mithraism
was a mysterious initiatory cult that shared many similarities with early Christianity,
and is believed by many scholars to have influenced practices of the Catholic
church. The central object in Mithraic worship was the Tauroctony, a scene of
Mithras ritually slaying a bull believed to be the constellation of Taurus. Scholars
still debtae whether or not Mithraism is derived from Zoroastrianism.
