No Ruz means "New Day," and is the most important
Zoroastrian (Parsi) holiday. It begins when the sun enters the constellation
Aries, and predates the Zoroastrian religion- going back seven thousand years
to ancient Mesopotamia. No Ruz celebrations still include colored eggs, one
of the oldest continuous cultural practices on earth. Other practices include
the growing of green shoots of lentil or wheat called Sabzeh, and giving gifts
of pastries and coins. The holiday
lasts thirteen days, and culminates in outdoor festivities and the ritual disposal
of the sabzeh.
