The Osculum infame (infamous kiss) comes to us from medieval witchcraft lore. According to some of the more fanciful accounts of witches, the "infamous kiss" was the ritual greeting given to the devil by his disciples. Specifically, the kiss was applied to the buttocks or anus of the devil, sometimes while he appeared in the form of a cat or a goat.

Accounts of the kiss are also found in depositions from the trials of the Templars, and in the accusations leveled at the Cathar heretics.
