The name "Rastafarian" refers to religious followers of Ras Tafari, former Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie. Ras Tafari's full title was H. I. M. (His Imperial Majesty) Ras Tafari Markonnen-"Ras" is not a name, but an honorific meaning "Prince" or "lord."

Selassie is believed by Rastafarians to be an incarnation of God, the second coming of Christ as predicted in the book of Revelation. Ras Tafari's personal emblem, the Lion of Judah, is now widely used as a symbol of Rastafarian belief.
