The name Sophia comes from the Greek, meaning wisdom. Sofia, inthe Gnostic belief system, was the unwitting creator of Yaldabaoth, the creator of the material world, and captor of humanity. Sophia plays twin roles in Gnostic thought, both as the unwitting agent of enslavement, and as redeemer, or Holy Wisdom.

Sofia can be related to the Kabbalistic Chokma, or the sphere of wisdom.
