The Tarot is a pack of (usually) 78 painted playing cards, which are organized much like a modern deck of cards, with the addition of twenty-two trumps (triumphs) and an additional suit. Tarot cards are used today mainly for divination purposes.

Tarot decks date from about the fifteenth century. While considered by many to be repositories of occult knowledge, the first tarot packs were parlor games.

Pronunciation: tare-oh • (noun)

Alternate: Tarocchi, Book of Thoth
