Vesica Pisces (Ichthus, Jesus Fish)
Back to Last Page     Full Glossary

Definition: This symbol has an unusual history. Used almost exclusively to denote membership in the Christian religion, it once meant something very different. The shape of the Vesica Pisces is derived from the intersection of two circles, and in Pagan times, was associated with the Godess Venus, and represented female genitalia. How it came to be associated with Christianity isn't entirely clear, but early depictions of Christ depict him as an infant within the vesica, representing the womb. The New Testament story of the loaves and fishes secretly reveals the geometric formula for the fish shaped device.
