Voodoo is an often derogatory slang term referring to the Vodoun religion and to the popular Hollywood misconceptions relating to that faith (ie, quasi-Haitian 'black magic'), although the term is used interchangably by practitioners in New Orleans and other parts of the US.
The religion commonly depicted in popular novels and movies is sensationalized and not generally representative of the Vodoun faith. 'Voodoo' is occasionally (and incorrectly) used as an umbrella term for other African-origin religions such as Palo or Santeria.
