The literal meaning of Warlock is "one who breaks from faith (or 'truth')." It was used to refer to a male practitioner of sorcery, or sometimes, to the devil. Contrary to common belief, it was not a generic reference to an 'oathbreaker' or traitor, but always used in the context of a practitioner of magic or aq devotee of Satan. In medieval culture, warlocks were often put forwards as the male equivalent of a witch (although believed to ride upon a pitchfork or a cat rather than a broomstick). It was certainly meant as a perjorative term, but then, so was witch.
