The
cabletow is an element of initiation introduced into the rites of Freemasonry
in the early eighteenth century. In the form of a rope hung from a candidate's
neck, the cable tow originally symbolized the penalty for breaking the Masonic
oath. Today, it symbolizes an initiate's humility, and their committment to
Masonic ideals.
