Thor's Hammer
is said to have been the Tau. As Thor was a sky god, a thunder god, his
hammer was a symbol of rain and fertility, hence power. It has been likened
also to the fylfot cross (swastika), and the Chinese Y. Like the thunderbolt
in the hands of the Assyrian storm gods it was a weapon of divine power.
The Cross
has been associated with the crossed fire sticks of the Chinese, it has
been likened to a bird with outstretched wings, to two human figures
crossed, and to man himself standing with outstretched arms. Interpreted
in the latter sense as symbolising the divine potential Man-we can understand
why criminals were nailed to the cross, the symbol which they had profaned;
and why a man who cannot write still signs his name with a cross.
