Ancient Pagan Symbols
Thus interpreted the symbolism of the cross with circle above it ceases to be a mystery. It represent~d quite simply the union of spirit and matter, masculine and feminine, and has been used as an emblem of life and immortality since prehistoric days. It is given to the Egyptian deities. Maat, the goddess of Truth, is
depicted presenting it to the Sun, the source of all life, and placed on tombs and sarcophagi it signified the ever living spirit, the immortality of the soul.
The Cross with a wheel in the centre is one of the oldest symbols of majesty and power in India and was given to Vishnu. A glance at the astronomical signs, which are said to have originated with the Egyptians, shows the cross, circle and crescent variously posed; that of Venus, the cross surmounted by a circle, is the old symbol of fecundity or life, and that of Mercury the older form of his caduceus, the Sacred Tau surmounted by the circle and crescent. |
