The Lotus is the Wheel symbol of Buddha, the petals representing spokes and the whole typifying the doctrine of perpetual cycles of existence.
The Rosettes so frequently found as architectural ornaments have been traced back by scholars to the lotus, and thus take on a solar significance.
The Anthemion or honeysuckle design so much used by the Greeks, was found on the earliest monuments of Nineveh. It was evidently an object of religious worship there, and owes its origin to the lotus bud, the supremely sacred flower.
