While the swastika is almost entirely associated in the West today with the Nazis, the symbol actually has a long history across the globe representing concepts very different from those given by the Nazis.

Cult Suicides

The reality of mass suicide pacts within a small number of religious groups is the source of perhaps the greatest stigma facing new religions. The reality is terrifying, even though they are exceedingly rare. Why would any group think suicide to be the ultimate expression of faith?

Heaven's Gate is most known for the mass suicide of 39 believers in 1997. What is far less known is that the Heaven's Gate community still exists and still teaches the messages of their now-dead founders.

Shamans play a vital role in their communities, acting as intermediaries between the physical and spiritual worlds. They exist in animistic cultures, where objects in the physical world have spirit counterparts that can bring blessing or catastrophe upon the tribe. They are most commonly associated with Native American culture, although they can, in fact, be found in cultures all over the world.

Religion and Fiction

Religion is an important influence on my pieces of fiction. However, fiction can also be highly influential on religion. While fictional religion cannot be taken literally, many of the ethics, worldviews, practices and metaphysics can be (and are) adopted by people who find real world meaning in them.

Why is the Occult so Associated with Satanism?

For many people, the word occult is practically synonymous with Satanism. Not only is that a relatively recent phenomena, but it's not grounded in any fact. They are Satan, Lucifer, Belial and Leviathan. These four figures correspond to the four cardinal points and the four elements, creating a Satanic framework for a common occult practice.
