Adventures in Creative Misquoting: Masons & WiccansCarrie answers a blog postA few weeks ago, I poked fun at a letter to the editor that demanded equal recognition for Christian symbols alongside such Wiccan and Masonic emblems as the Eye of Horus and the Washington monument. The letter was written by one Carrie Scoggins, who eventually found our little corner of the internets. Carrie writes:
"Just so you know, since you seemed to only print part of what I said about the 10 Commandments issue in the Sidelines newspaper at MTSU... First, the lawsuit was brought by Wiccans, as that is a primarily Wiccan area... Secondly, here are the quotes from Freemason's own books to 'site my sources,' as they really do worship those deities stated and it is written in their books (not just counter-cult ministries such as Texe Marrs, Ed Decker, and John Ankerberg's books exposing them as a cult.. However those books do have a bibliography so that they can not be sued for libel! They are legit) Here are the quotes from the Freemason's books showing they themselves say they worship those deities, and indeed it is from 'Egyptian' Beliefs (Lost Keys Of Freemasonry 'mystic myths of Egypt'). This screed is followed by a very typical collection of Albert Pike and Manly Hall quotes (snipped for brevity) designed to point out the craven Satanic motives of Freemasonry; it rarely matters that the quotes are out of context, false, or simply not representative of Freemasonry: [blockquote]Albert Pike is said to the the foundation of the Masonic Lodge's belief system. Quote from Albert Pike's Instruction To The 23 Of Supreme Councils Of The World, July 14 1889 : "Yes, Lucifer is god and unfortunately Addony is also god, the true philosophical religion is the belief in Lucifer, the equal of Addony... But Lucifer, god of light and god of good, is struggling for humanity against Addony god of darkness and evil". Quote from Manly P. Hall's book Lost Keys Of Freemasonry, Page 48 "When the mason learns that the key to being the warrior on the block is the proper application of the dynamo of living power he has learned the mystery of his craft. The seething energies of Lucifer are in his hands, and before he may step onward and upward he must prove his ability to properly apply this energy." Concerning the pagan god Horus, the eye of Horus, or the Egyptian god on our one dollar bill, being a deity in the masonic lodge, I have a direct quote from the Masonic Monitor (54:11). "(The) All seeing eye pervades the inner most recesses of the human heart, and will reward us according to our merits." " Inevitably, these quotes are not collected from their purported sources, but compiled by solitary cherry pickers and copied endlessly by folks who seldom, if ever, check them against the books they appear in*- yet, at the sight of them, we are supposed to crumble before their self-evidence. Manly Hall says Lucifer, so indeed, the Washington monument is, in fact, a Wiccan symbol! I have seen the light. My response to Carrie: [blockquote]I don't know how to tell you this, but you're being misinformed. You're not quoting Pike and Hall, you're quoting other people's cherry-picked quotes from Pike and Hall. Which goes to show you should always do your own research. (Especially as one of your quotes is fabricated of whole cloth. I'll leave you to discover which one.) You seem to believe that by cobbling together a handful of small snippets of text, you can somehow prove that all Freemasons are guilty of the thing you insinuate against these writers- a preposterous idea. The other important point you've missed is that something one mason believes is simply not believed by all Masons. You acknowledge as much yourself reprinting Hall's thoughts; if you'd bothered to actually read any of these books you'd see first hand that Masonry is not a religion and worships no gods of its own. This is simply not a "they" issue, it's a "he" issue- and had you read any of these quotes in context, you would not have found a single admission of devil worship- because these men were not devil worshipers (and they certainly were not Wiccans).[/blockquote] |
