Kirstie Alley's first experience with the Church of Scientology was when she joined a Narconon program in 1979 to get over cocaine addiction. Narconon bases its techniques on Scientology beliefs and practices.

In 1999, Source magazine identified Alley as an OT VI.

"When I came to Los Angeles in 1979 I went to the detox center at Narconon. It was like night and day once I had completed the program. I've never had the desire to do drugs since. When I was straight, I had the courage and energy to try to become an actress. I owe my career to my will to stop using."

"The one thing that was really cool about L. Ron Hubbard was that he really got the concept that if people united, and not in some airy-fairy way, but if they united and they put their, you know, muscle and brawn together and they worked really hard, you could create a better civilization."

"To tell you the honest-to-God truth: without Scientology, I would be dead. So, I can personally highly recommend it."
