Ten Sephirot of Kabbalah

Tree of Life
Catherine Beyer
The ten sephirot represent ten aspects of the divine will in Kabbalah. They are commonly depicted in a diagram known as the Tree of Life. Interpretations of both the Tree and the sephirot can vary considerably between sources. Below on general associations for each sephirot.

Keter – "Crown":

The divine will, the first, pure intentions of the Ein Soph, the divine essence from which all creation springs. Utterly beyond definition or comprehension, the Ein Soph exists outside of the Tree entirely.

Chokmah – "Wisdom":

Conscious intellect, active (masculine) principle of creation.

Binah – "Understanding":

Ideas set to form; the feminine receptive principle and one of only two female sephirot (the other being Malkuth).

Da'at – "Knowledge":

Da'at is a reflection of Keter, which is one of many reasons that, when included in a Tree of Life, Da'at is not counted among the sephirot. It is also sometimes described as an abyss, and being the absence of a sephirot rather than being a sephirot itself. Da'at can also be seen as the offspring of Chokmah and Binah. It is the origin of physical creation, as opposed to the previous sephirot, which are entirely spiritual/intellectual.

Hesed (or Chesed) – "Kindness":

Kindness and love; the active principle initiating action.

Gevurah – "Severity":

Strength, power, judgment, division; contrary to the attracting powers of Hesed.

Tiferet - "Beauty":

The desirable balance between Hesed and Gevurah.

Netzah – "Victory":

Leadership, perseverance and endurance to put higher concepts into action.

Hod – "Splendor":

Hod is the receptacle of Netzah, it is submission to god's will and the community which carries out the commands of the leadership.

Yesod – "Foundation":

Yesod is the production of Netzah and Hod, translating all that has come before it into the physical reality of Malkuth.

Malkuth – "Kingship":

Physical existence, expressing the concepts of all the sephirot feeding into it.
